| The Pets People |
How many different colored vests are there for service dogs and what do the colors ...?
mean (if they mean anything)? Thanks!
Can you tell me ALL of the colors please. Thanks again!
There are nearly as many colors as there are people who have a preference. I myself have a red one, a green one, and even a purple sequined one some friends gave me for my birthday.
I'm speaking from the U.S. point of view.
The only color that has any standardized meaning is the blaze orange one, which is supposed to mean "hearing dog." It doesn't always, and not all hearing dogs wear blaze orange either. However, some state laws specify that only a hearing dog can wear a blaze orange cape or leash. Not all do, and the federal has no specific color requirements.
Program trained dogs may wear the colors of their school.
There has been a campaign by one group to try to make purple mean psychiatric service dog, but there are so many people without psych disabilities who were already using purple that it's pretty meaningless. I have to wonder if I'd really want to advertise my disability, other than for hearing anyway. It's my personal business. The reason I might consider it for hearing is that it does tell people who know what blaze orange means that the hadnler can't hear them when they approach from behind so they don't get angry when the handler doesn't answer them and grab them.
It's still a personal choice for each service dog owner as to what colors to use.
