How do I litter train my ferret?
I have 2 ferrets and have for a couple years now. I've tried everything I can think of to get the younger to use his litter but he refuses. I've tried multiple boxes, different litters, moving it to where he does his business (all over the bottom level of the cage - ferret nation two level cage) and nothing! He gets lots of love, has a friend all the time, is not sick (we've checked) and is very friendly and responsive to us.
Does anyone have ANY ideas? I'm at a complete loss!
He needs litter pan boot camp!
Mine were terrors in their Ferret Nation 142, also!
1. Put up the middle ramp and only give them half of the cage. Half of the cage is enough space for them to live and it will be easier to get him into the habit of going in the box. (They will get the other half back!) If he also poops on the shelf, take the shelf out so they just have one level.
2. Get the square, high back litter pans. Not the corner ones or low back ones. My male will ONLY use these:

Or something similar to those.
3. Use one, and only one type of litter. The best things to use are Yesterday's News CAT litter (the ferret type is overpriced and the same thing.), Feline Pine cat litter, plain old newspaper, or wood stove pellets. Only change the brand of litter if you must.
4. Drill a hole in the top of the litter box. Get some metal shower hooks and put it in the hole and hook the litter box to the bars of the cage.
5. Keep the box CLEAN! If I don't clean the box every single day then my male refuses to use it.
6. Pick up allll missed poops and put it in the litter box or in the garbage. Clean the floor pan VERY well so that he can't smell where he pooped and go there again. Then take a strong smelling pet friendly cleaner (like vinegar) and wipe the cage with that so there is no poop smell left.
7. Take toys with hooks and use shower hooks to tie them to every corner of the cage that doesn't have a food dish or litter box near it. Ferrets do not like pooping on material or nice stuff.
8. Also get an old towel, blanket, or piece of clothing and put it all over the bottom of the cage so he might not want to go there. Make sure it's something you don't mind throwing away.
Keep up with all this and eventually he'll start using the box. Once you trust him, give him the bottom shelf back. Once he becomes a pro at the bottom pan and the shelf, give him the 2nd floor pan. Then he'll have two floor pans and a shelf. Then the other shelf. If he poops on the other floor pan up top, then you might have to put a litter box up there, too. Sometimes they just can't hold it. Mine weren't able to, but then one day both just stopped using the one up top and now they only have one. (They have two again because I added onto the 142 to make it a 3 level.)
Good luck!
